The American Association of Orthodontists advises parents that it is best for children to be seen by age 7 for an initial orthodontic consultation. At this age, the first permanent teeth have typically erupted and any issues with jaw growth or tooth eruption can be identified early on and corrected if necessary.

Early treatment can help normalize growth deficiencies of the jaws, improve bite and speech problems, aid in the eruption of permanent teeth, avoid the need for tooth extractions during future treatment, and improve alignment and crowding issues. Often times treatment can be delayed until all of the permanent teeth have erupted into the mouth and if so, Dr. Bacon will recommend postponing orthodontic care until a more appropriate age.
